Rovereto - Mart

MART

The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Rovereto is one of the most interesting museums in Italy. The main museum is located in Corso Bettini in Rovereto, between two 18th-century buildings a stone’s throw from the historic centre. It houses a rich collection of art of various styles, spanning Futurism, Pop Art, Arte Povera and Realism right up to more contemporary movements.
The building housing the Mart was built by Swiss architect Mario Botta in partnership with Roveretano engineer Giulio Andeoli. The museum extends over four floors, covering 12,000m2 in total, of which 6,000m2 is exhibition space.
Some of the 3,000 plus works by Fortunato Depero, donated by the artist to the city of Rovereto and then to the museum, are one of the highlights of the Mart’s collection, together with works by other leading futurists of the likes of Giacomo Balla, Carlo Carrà, Luigi Russolo, Gino Severini, Enrico Prampolini, Thayaht and Tullio Crali. Some of the Mart’s biggest purchases include works by some of the biggest Italian names of the 20th century: Medardo Rosso, Mario Sironi, Giorgio de Chirico, Giorgio Morandi, Lucio Fontana, Emilio Vedova, Piero Manzoni, Alighiero Boetti, and Mario Schifano.
