To protect the road leading from the Vezzena Pass to Lavarone and Trento, the Austrians built a concrete and cement line of defence: forts Luserna and Busa Verle and the Spiz Vezzena, an armed viewpoint located over 1900m above sea level. Between Fort Luserna and Fort Busa Verle they built a network of trenches, traps and barbed wire barriers as thick as 50 metres, and the Basson, a hill which was hollowed out completely and filled with machine guns.
